Jimmy Bryan received his M.A. in history from the University of Texas at Arlington. His primary interests are in the Civil War and Texas history.
Texas Confederate Gravesite Project Records are comprised of correspondence, research files, books, and printed material. Bryan collected the material between 1988 and 1990 with the intent of publishing a book listing all of the Confederate soldiers' gravesites in Texas. The State of Texas had attempted to collect similar information for the centennial of the Civil War. Bryan included all the information the state had received plus as much more as he could collect. This information is listed by the county of the gravesite. The information gathering process depended on volunteers who were interested in Confederate soldiers obtaining and submitting information they had. The collectors can be divided into two groups: county historical societies/historians and descendants of the Confederate soldiers.
The county historians tried to list all known gravesites in their county. The descendants/family historians tended to list all their known ancestors who were buried in Texas, regardless of location of the grave(s). The record for Montague County is particularly good. Several county historical societies wrote back to Bryan suggesting he buy their county history book, which contained the information. If such books were purchased, they were donated to the University of Texas at Arlington Library separately.
The State of Texas attempted a similar project as part of the centennial observance of the Civil War. Copies of all the information the State received, which was not as comprehensive are included in these project files. These files comprise Series I.
Series II is comprised of the surname lists, which were predominantly compiled from published sources but include some of the listings submitted by the volunteers. These are alphabetical by the first letter of the last name only, but are keyed by a number in the left-hand margin to the published source from which the information was extracted. Bryan's published sources are listed in the first folder in Series II.
Series III contains other information of interest to the researcher, including a list of names of cemeteries in each county, the correspondence Mr. Bryan received on the subject, and a county map of Williamson County, showing the location of all cemeteries in that county.
