The Shorthorn, which replaced The Grubbonian, began as a monthly magazine in April of 1919. The student body selected the name "Shorthorn" during a campus-wide contest
during which students submitted possible names. During 1922, The Shorthorn changed from a monthly to a weekly publication.

As noted on the collection inventory some volume numbers do not follow numerical order, but occasionally repeat numbers already used. All Shorthorns were listed in chronological order despite volume numbering. Many volumes are incomplete and some volumes are missing. Several are oversize volumes which are wrapped individually and stored on the oversize shelf. Smaller volumes were placed in manuscript boxes.
