He received a law degree from The University of Texas in 1947 after service in the Navy during World War II. Except for his service as Secretary of State from 1966 to 1967 and as Attorney General from 1973 to 1978, he has been a trial lawyer in Houston. In May, 1978 he defeated Dolph Briscoe for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, but was defeated in the November election by Republican Bill Clements.

Historical Note

The John L. Hill campaign headquarters worked for the 1978 election of Hill to the position of governor of Texas, for which he was defeated.

Hill was born in Breckenridge, Texas, in 1923. He received a law degree from The University of Texas in 1947 after service in the Navy during World War II. Except for his service as Secretary of State from 1966 to 1967 and as Attorney General from 1973 to 1978, he has been a trial lawyer in Houston. In May, 1978 he defeated Dolph Briscoe for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, but was defeated in the November election by Republican Bill Clements.

Scope and Contents

The records from the John Hill campaign headquarters consist primarily of correspondence from 1976 through 1978 in support of Hill's candidacy for governor in 1978. The materials are organized in three series. The first series of general office files contain letters of support from prominent Texans urging him to run. Also included is correspondence from the public supporting Hill's stand on various issues as well as photographs, biographies, campaign materials, newspaper publicity and a variety of campaign files. Of special interest are manuals outlining the organization of the state office and planning and strategy for projects to undertake in the campaign ahead.
