Historical Note

This collection was produced by The University of Texas at Arlington Library administrative offices from 1959 through 1979 and documents the history of the administration during these years as well as the growth of the collection and the various construction projects, additions and remodeling of the library building. The library files were retired in 1977 by Mary Catherine Monroe of the Archives' staff with subsequent additions by the administrative staff in 1979 and 1980. There are no records previous to 1959 other than library accession books from 1917 through 1939, 1952 through 1958, and two books purchased for the library in 1917.

Minutes of library administrative and staff committees as well as staff association minutes and newsletters are included from 1963 through 1979. Specifications for planning and constructing the library, including its interior design are located in the Building Addition and Library Building Committee files. Architectural floor plans, drawings of the elevation, and remodeling plans for the various floors are available for 1961 through 1979. Correspondence, minutes, reports, and other documents are arranged primarily by subject. Photographs of the library, its staff, and activities are in various locations. See the photograph file as well as Oversize Box 153. Those in the oversize box have been matted and encapsulated for exhibit purposes. The University Archives Photographic Collection contains library photographs from sources other than the Library.

Processing Information

Several accessions of library records from 1977 through 1980 were combined to create this collection. After consultation with the library's administrative services officer, the records were arranged alphabetically by subject-document type. Single letters or memos which were originally filed by subject were placed in general correspondence or memo files chronologically in order to eliminate excessive files and paperwork. Folder titles were altered only if necessary to be consistent in describing similar materials throughout the years. The contents of each folder are chronological or in the original order. Minutes of University committees were removed and were combined with the University Archives' serials files in order to complete these holdings (See serials tray in Archives' card catalog for holdings.) Minutes of library committees and other library serials originally in the University Archives' serials files were transferred to the Library's collection to complete these holdings. Display photographs and oversize items were placed at the end of the collection. Architectural floor plans were rolled up and are arranged chronologically. Ledgers, invoices, vouchers, equipment catalogs, and other material either duplicated elsewhere, or of non-permanent value, were discarded with the advice of the Business Office and the permission of the University Librarian.
