 Biographical Note

Jack Parrish Avery was born in 1901 in St. Louis, Missouri. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army from 1942-1943, and after his honorable discharge was employed for over 25 years as a machinist at General Dynamics.

 Scope and Contents

Correspondence, minutes of Neighborhood Action, Inc. (1967-1973) and the Tarrant County Democratic Organizing Committee (1961-1973), photograph, printed material, voter lists, Neighborhood Action News (1968-1971), and miscellaneous memorabilia. Many of the records in this collection reflect Mr. Avery's involvement in political and civic affairs. The minutes (1967-1973) of Neighborhood Action, Inc., of which he was a board member, are included along with the minutes of the Tarrant County Democratic Organizing Committee annual meetings (1961-1971, 1973), board meetings (1967) and steering committee meetings (1965, 1967). Mr. Avery served as treasurer of the T.C.D.O.C. for many years. The collection also contains some material from District 12 Democrats, Texas Liberal Democrats, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Lodge 776, Fort Worth, Texas. Mr. Avery was a member of all of these organizations.

 Provenance

Mr. Avery's papers were donated to the Archives in 1976 by his sister, Mary Avery.

The Jack P. Avery Papers were received with and separated from the Margaret B. Carter Papers (AR239).

The collection was received in good order. Some folder titles were changes to facilitate arrangement by subject and document type.

Materials are arranged alphabetically by subject or document type and thereunder chronologically.

 Separated Material

Copies of The Texas Observer for February 14, 1955; October 3 - November 15, 1975, were removed from the collection as these issues are available on microfilm elsewhere in the Library.
