Historical Note

The Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO), Southwest Region, was established on January 3, 1968, with a membership of fifteen. Slowdowns, sick-ins, and a fractious relationship with the Federal Aviation Administration characterized the union's brief, but turbulent life. The decision to strike for higher pay and improved safety standards proved disastrous. The strike of 15,000 PATCO members, which began on August 3, 1981, resulted in the firing of most of the members by President Ronald Reagan and the eventual decertification of the union.
