Historical Note

Dallas Typographical Union No. 173 was first chartered, June 5, 1875, by the International Typographical Union. Four charters were surrendered before the final charter was issued on October 23, 1885.

Includes records of the Dallas Labor Temple Association (1916-1931). Also included is correspondence and printed material from the International Typographical Union and several typographical locals; reports of delegates to state and international conventions; political materials on typographical union elections as well as state and national elections; printed material on labor legislation, the Taft-Hartley Act, the printing industry, ITU history, and local no. 173's 30th, 40th, and 50th anniversary programs.

Organization

The records are organized in eleven series:
Dallas Typographical Union Papers are arranged in series alphabetically, and chronologically within the series. The Contracts Series is divided in 3 parts--general, commercial scale committee, newspaper scale committee, and joint standing committee; within each division, the papers are arranged chronologically. Generally, labor archives remove the contracts and place them in a special "contracts" collection. However, the collection contained many contracts and the finished contract was needed to complete the progression of contract negotiations, so the contracts weren't removed. The researcher will find duplicates of contract proofs, but these were preserved in their original order to show the progress of the negotiations.
The Cases Series is arranged alphabetically by name of person. The cases include trial committee proceedings and correspondence concerning charges against union members. Also included in the "cases" series are union versus publisher cases filed alphabetically at end of this series.
The Correspondence series is filed alphabetically by subject, then chronologically within each folder, the general correspondence being filed at the front of the series.
The Delegates Reports Series is arranged alphabetically by name of organization, then chronologically.
The Elections and Political series is arranged in two divisions. The first division is material concerning Typographical Union elections, both local and international. These are arranged chronologically within each folder. The second division contains political material not directly related to Typographical union elections. This group of materials include general political material plus material dealing with specific political organizations. These organizations include COPE, LLPE, NLRB and Voter's League. The material on specific organizations are arranged alphabetically, then chronologically.
The Financial Series is arranged alphabetically by document type, then chronologically. Included in this series is the ledgers, but because of their size, they are filed at the end of the collection.
The Minutes Series is arranged alphabetically by group's name, then chronologically. Additional minutes are arranged at the end of the collection.
The Miscellaneous Records Series includes all the material that did not logically fit into any of the other series. It includes newsclippings and news articles, and various publications. The records are arranged alphabetically by subject.
The Mortuary Claims Series is arranged chronologically in general, with the records of three specific claims filed at the end of the series.
The Reports Series is arranged alphabetically by document type, then chronologically within each folder.
The Special Assistance Reports Series is arranged chronologically. The Special Assistance covered the expenses of union members acting in the role of organizers. A specific file on Joe E. Moody's reports is arranged at the front of this series.
The Teletype Series is arranged by the two main document types. First, the correspondence and news articles and second, the information concerning courses for teletypesetting.

Separated Material

The charter of Junior Typographical Union from International Typographical Union of North America, May 1939, was placed in the Charter Collection with other labor union charters. See 233-CB-CH18.

Two buttons were placed in the Labor Button Collection: "Come Alive in '75, Los Angeles, ITU Convention" and "Support Local 53 Telegraph Strikers."

Storm chapel laws were taken out of its frame and placed in the display file.

A strike sign, "Dallas Typographical Union #173, AFL-CIO on Strike Against Dallas Morning News," is shelved in the Archives.
