<bioghist encodinganalog="545"><head>Historical Note</head><p>John W. Hays was born in Rusk County, Texas, in 1908. He grew up in Dallas where he worked as a newsboy, circulation salesman, pressman, and press operator for the four Dallas newspapers with most of his career being with the <emph render="bolditalic">Dallas Times-Herald</emph>. He joined the Dallas Newspaper Printing Pressmen’s Union Local No. 21 in 1928 and served as secretary, vice-president, and president. He was active in Dallas and Texas politics and the labor movement on the local, state, and national levels. He ran unsuccessfully for president of the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants’ Union of North America. He often used the nickname Preacher.</p></bioghist>
<scopecontent encodinganalog="520"><head>Scope and Contents</head><p>Correspondence, minutes, financial records, newsletters, agreements, resolutions, photographs, tape recordings, biographical information, certificates, work cards, phonograph records, and gavels.
The collection includes personal papers and union records and correspondence produced while Hays served as an officer in the following groups from 1946 through 1966: Texas State Federation of Labor, Dallas Newspaper Printing Pressmen’s Union Local No. 21, Dallas Central Labor Council, Dallas Union Label and Services Trade Council,
Texas Allied Printing Trades Council, Dallas Allied Printing Trades Council, Joint Council of Printing Pressmen, Dallas Labor Unions’ Educational Cooperative, and the North American Newspaper-Web Conference of the United States and Canada.
Also included are some records of Ladies’ Auxiliary No. 30 of the Dallas Newspaper Printing Pressmen’s Union Local No. 21 and correspondence with Estes Kefauver, Price Daniel, John Connally, Lyndon Baines Johnson, and Mullinax, Wells &amp; Morris.
