Joe P. Hawn was the representative from the Pleasant Grove section of Dallas, Texas, during the 61st through 63rd sessions (1969-1973) of the Texas House of Representatives. He was a retired Captain of the Dallas Fire Department and served six years as Manager of the Pleasant Grove Chamber of Commerce before being elected a state representative in 1968.
Correspondence, financial records, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, brochures, house bills, news releases, certificates, reports, rosters, minutes, speeches, biographical data, and scrapbooks. Includes campaign records, certificates of election, and legislative files as well as personal correspondence. The scrapbook is a photocopy of newspaper clippings and correspondence which trace Hawn’s political career. The papers include a history and records of Angels, Incorporated, a Dallas area school for mentally retarded children, and a report of two Wood County cemeteries (which includes a list of persons buried there): Smyrna Cemetery (1873-1972) and Old Mt. Zion Cemetery (1893-1972).

The papers were in fairly good order when received. The folders were generally in alphabetical order by the title of the material in the folder. The basic organization was kept. Folders that were out of order were returned to their proper place, and a few folder titles were changed to more clearly describe the contents. Papers that were obviously misfiled were put in their proper folder. The contents of each folder were put in chronological order. They did not have any apparent order when received.
