Historical Note

The Houston Labor Council and the Houston Building Trades Council merged on February 5, 1918, to form the Houston Labor and Trades Council. The Council was made up of representatives of the AFL unions in the Houston area. In 1959, the Houston Labor and Trades Council merged with the Houston Area Industrial Union Council, CIO, to form the Harris County AFL-CIO Council.

Scope and Contents

Council minutes and financial records, 1911-1970; executive board minutes, 1959-1970. A few Harris County Committee on Political Education (COPE) minutes are also included.

Records from 1911 until 1959 are from the Houston Labor and Trades Council--AFL and consist of minutes of regular council meetings and financial records. Records after 1959 are from the Harris County AFL-CIO Council, which was formed following the merger of the AFL and the CIO. They consist of both executive board minutes and regular council meeting minutes.

Its name was changed to the Houston Labor Journal and Labor Messenger on January 27, 1956. On May 11, 1956, it was changed to the Houston Labor Journal. The paper ceased publication in 1965.)
