Historical Sketch

The Tarrant County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, was created August 15, 1957, by the merger of the Fort Worth Trades Assembly, AFL and the Tarrant County Industrial Union Council, CIO.

The past presidents of the Tarrant County Central Labor Council are as follows:

Scope and Contents

Correspondence, 1956-1971; minutes, regular and executive board meetings, 1957-1971; financial records, 1957-1960; constitutions and by-laws, membership lists and directories, photographs, and printed material. The collection includes records from several civic groups including the Community Action Program Committee in which members of the Labor Council were active. Correspondents include George Meany, Hank Brown, Roy Evans, and Jim Wright. Includes material from the Tarrant County Committee on Political Education and on the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee’s efforts in the Rio Grande Valley and California and its grape boycott.


 

Organization

The records are organized in two series.
Series I is arranged by document-subject type. Within each folder, the material is in chronological order. Near the end of the series are two separate record groups: the Community Action Program Committee and the Tarrant County Committee on Political Education. They are in the same order as the rest of the series. After these subgroups, there is a group of miscellaneous records which are listed in alphabetical order by subject. Within each folder, materials which are dated are arranged in chronological order.
Series II is arranged by document-subject type. Within each folder, the material is in chronological order. Near the end of the series are three separate record groups: the Farm Workers' Movement, the Tarrant County Community Action Agency, and the Tarrant County Junior College Board of Trustees. The Farm Workers' records are in chronological order. The other two record groups are arranged by document-subject type. Within each document type, the records are in chronological order. An envelope of photographs is at the end of the series.
