Biographical Note

Anna C. Leahy, a retired Fort Worth high school teacher, was the director of the program for Senior Citizens Month with Senior Citizens of America in Washington, D.C. It was through her efforts that May was declared Senior Citizens Month nationwide. Leahy was named Fort Worth senior citizen of the year in 1972.

Correspondence, reports, proclamations, photographs, clippings, newsletters, booklets, commemorative stamp, and articles. Includes letters and proclamations from presidents, governors, mayors, and legislators; a history of the nationwide development of Senior Citizens Month by Leahy; and records from Leahy’s service with Senior Citizens of America, 1956-1963.

Organization

For the most part, the collection was left in its original order. It is arranged by document-subject type. Material within each document type is arranged in reverse chronological order.
Proclamations by governors are in alphabetical order by state. They were part of the material sent to President Kennedy and his committee for study before they issued the nationwide proclamation of Senior Citizens' Month (1963).
