Abstract: The papers contain information on the forming of the San Antonio local and the breaking up of the one in Fort Worth, along with records of other defunct guild locals. The activities and duties of a union representative are well documented in the correspondence and contract files. Information may be found concerning Mr. Hieken's efforts with the Arkansas Gazette Publishing Company strike at Little Rock. The collection contains papers that relate to various political and civic activities in which Mr. Hieken was involved. The researcher will find pertinent information from the international union, such as the International Executive Board minutes, 1947-1953. These files not only supplement the Texas material, but give a view of the working of the American Newspaper Guild at a higher level. Material on attempts from 1950-1952 to start a labor newspaper called the National Reporter is of interest. Other miscellaneous items of interest include a file on anti-union literature of the Joseph McCarthy era.

Biographical Note

Hieken joined the American Newspaper Guild in 1934. He served as an international representative from 1946 to 1954. During these years he worked in many of the union’s projects in Texas and maintained close relations with several Guild locals in the state.

Scope and Contents

Correspondence, minutes, membership lists, financial documents, legal documents, constitutions, agreements, reports, newspaper clippings, photograph, bulletins, newsletters, surveys, and printed material. The papers cover the period during which Hieken served as international representative of the American Newspaper Guild, 1946-1954. They include personal materials related to various Democratic Party and social welfare organizations that he participated in as well as anti-union literature from the McCarthy era.

Included are records and correspondence of the American Newspaper Guild, 1943-1955; the Houston Newspaper Guild, 1941-1952; the San Antonio Newspaper Guild, 1947-1954; the Fort Worth Newspaper Guild, 1945-1952 (features organizing efforts at the Fort Worth Press and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram); the Arkansas Newspaper Guild, 1949-1953; the Texas State Industrial Union Council, 1947-1954; scattered issues, 1953-1956, and minutes of the permanent committee of the independent newspaper enterprise organized to operate the Texas Observer in 1954 as well as correspondence with editor, Ronnie Dugger, 1954-1959; and constitutions and minutes of the Houston Area Industrial Union Council, 1950-1956. The Guild files contain information on the formation of various locals as well as efforts to organize press employees at several printing establishments. The files also contain records of defunct locals.

Of special interest is material on the establishment by American trade unions of a labor newspaper, The National Reporter, 1950-1952. Contains material on strikes against newspapers by local unions including one in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and another in Little Rock, Ark.; also an official report of the proceedings of an National Labor Relations Board hearing in May, 1946, in the case of the American Newspaper Guild vs. Triangle Publications, Inc.
