Richard P. Swallow papers,1957-2007
Biographical Sketch of Richard P. SwallowRichard Proctor Swallow is an architect, artist, and educator. He was born and raised in Rhode Island and received his bachelor's degree in architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1953. He also served in Korea and Japan as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Swallow married his wife Gail on May 19, 1956, in Providence. He received his master's in architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1957 and moved to Austin, where he began his tenure at the University of Texas. Swallow has been a registered architect in Texas since 1959. He is an emeritus member of the American Institute of Architects and the Texas Society of Architects. Swallow has collaborated with other architects as well as practiced on his own in both Austin and Taos; he is licensed for both architecture and interior design. His projects have been published in two books, and he has had one exhibition in New York. He was project head and edited four publications on the environmental plan and prototype research facilities for the Buescher Science Park Project, in Smithville and Camp Swift, Texas. Swallow has been active at UT as a member of the Graduate Assembly, Faculty Council and Senate, and many ad hoc and standing committees, including several campus building committees. He has been chair of the Lectures, Exhibits, Curriculum, and Graduate Studies Committees and has received the Paul Philippe Cret Centennial Teaching Fellowship in Architecture. Swallow has traveled extensively in Europe, North America, Asia, and the Caribbean. He retired as Professor Emeritus after 50 years of teaching at the School of Architecture on August 31, 2007.
