Glenn Cook is a landscape architect and educator. He was born in Port
Arthur, Texas, in June 1940, and moved to Louisiana with his family as a child.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture from
Louisiana State University in 1964. Cook served on active duty in the Army from
1964 to 1966, and served from 1966 to 1971 in the active reserves as commander
of a construction engineer company. He resigned at the rank of captain, then
went on to teach at MSU from 1978 to 2010. Cook received a master's degree in
Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Mississippi in 1986.
Cook began his career in landscape architecture at the firm Stewart E.
King & Associates in San Antonio, taking ownership of the firm in 1970. In
1978, he took a teaching position with the Department of Landscape Architecture
at MSU. During his 32 years at MSU, he maintained a part-time consultation
practice, which he continues today. With co-author Carolyn Peterson, Cook
received the Alamo Award from the Daughters of the Republic of Texas for a
25-year master plan for the Alamo buildings and grounds in 1979. Cook published
a book, Innovative Outdoor Recreation
Developments, with the National Recreation and Park Association in
2000.
Cook is active in both professional and civic organizations. With the
American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), he served as president of the
Southwest Chapter from 1975 to 1976, president of the Texas Chapter from 1976
to 1977, president of the Mississippi Chapter from 1995 to 1996, and was
inducted into the Council of Fellows in 1997. Cook also has ongoing leadership
roles with the Boy Scouts of America, Kiwanis International, and the Episcopal
Church of the Resurrection in Starkville, Mississippi. He is married and has
three sons.
The collection consists of two series: Project Files and Drawings. The
Project Files series contains a plan for the Alamo buildings and grounds and
plans and specifications for the Spanish Governor's Palace Park in San Antonio.
The Drawings series consists of architectural landscape drawings mostly done in
collaboration with Ford, Powell & Carson Architects & Planners.
Projects are primarily from the 1970s in the San Antonio area.
