Administrative History of the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture:

The School of Architecture was established within UT's Engineering Department in 1910, when Dean T.U. Taylor of the Department of Engineering appointed Hugo F. Kuehne the School of Architecture's first faculty member. The university's first degree in Architecture was granted to Bertram E. Giesecke in 1913. In 1920, the Department of Engineering became the College of Engineering, and the School of Architecture became the Department of Architecture within the College of Engineering.

The Department was granted membership in the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture in 1925. 1927 saw the Department move from its original home in the Engineering Building to B Hall (now destroyed), a move necessitated by the Department's growth.

The Department of Architectural Engineering was associated with the Department of Architecture from its inception in 1928 until 1951, when it was granted autonomy. The Association of Student Architects also was created in 1928, the Wind-Up, the Association's annual year-end event, is well documented in the records. Student enrollment stood at 115 in 1929, and 200 in 1930.

In 1930, $300,000 was budgeted for a new Architecture building; Goldsmith Hall, designed by Paul Phillipe Cret, was completed in 1933. The program was accredited by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards in 1935, and the Department was accredited by the National Architecture Accrediting Board in 1940.

Student enrollment stood at 600 in 1948. A "semiautonomous school," a division of the College of Engineering, was created that year and granted full autonomy in 1951. The Advisory Council of the School of Architecture was formed in 1970, and the Dean's Council was formed in 1974.

Today, the School of Architecture is housed in Goldsmith, Battle, and Sutton Halls. There are 47 faculty members and approximately 800 students.

Scope and Contents of the Collection:

Publications, case files, memoranda, correspondence, reports, scrapbooks, and photographs (15 linear feet, plus 12 linear feet of oversized materials) record the activities of the School of Architecture of the University of Texas at Austin, 1911-ongoing (bulk 1960-2002). The fonds is arranged into two subgroups: 1) the School of Architecture Records, and 2) School of Architecture Student and Alumni Records. The records document the evolution of the school from a small unit within the UT Department of Engineering to an independent and prestigious School of Architecture.

Within Subgroup 1 (School of Architecture Records), the General Administrative Records series provides a selective yet broad overview of the SOA's administration, curricula, and events, with the bulk of the materials stemming from the last 40 years. This subgroup also encompasses the Faculty series, which documents the work and activities of SOA professors (1911-2000). Material that remains unprocessed consists of clippings, photocopied articles and notes concerning SOA and prominent faculty, much of which is arranged chronologically or by subject, and a large collection of lantern slides.

Subgroup 2 (Architecture Student and Alumni Records) is substantial in quantity but not comprehensive in terms of coverage. Records include those of the Association of Student Architects, Tau Sigma Delta (the architectural honor society), and the Student Architects' Wives Association, as well as student and alumni case files. Finally, the School's publications (arranged by provenance within each subgroup) document the School's history, activities, and constituents, and also provide insight into contemporary architectural theories and trends.

The School of Architecture Archives is an artificial collection of materials relating to or created by school offices, faculty members, students, and alumni of the School of Architecture. These materials were received by the Alexander Architectural Archive with little or no information concerning the creators of the records or the chain of custody, and were without original order. The processors (Atos, King, and Naron) developed an arrangement that they deemed most conducive to research and possible expansion through the addition of new materials at a later date.

Series Abstract
Series C1 (General) consists of material relating to the faculty as a whole (rosters and résumés in particular) and material that cannot be attributed to one individual. Series C2 (Faculty Members) consists of material relating to individual faculty members. Of note is Hugo Kuehne's correspondence from 1911 to 1913. Syllabi form the greatest part of the course material. It should be noted that not all case files include all sub-series files; for example, the only current "Membership" file is in Blake Alexander's case file.

Series E: Center for the Study of American Architecture and Design, 1980-1999, undated
Series Abstract
The Center for the Study of American Architecture and Design (CAAD), originally known as the Center for the Study of Southwestern Architecture, was established in 1981. The Center's goal is "to provide scholars, practitioners, students, and others with opportunities to examine contemporary and historical issues in architecture and other related design disciplines." CAAD's printed public relations materials make up the bulk of this series. The proposal for the establishment of the Center, memos, and other records provide insight into the purpose of and activities sponsored by the Center. One such activity is the organization of conferences and symposiums, for instance the 1986 symposium "Architecture in the Age of Information."

Series F: Photographic Materials, 1920-1980, undated
Series Abstract
The photographic materials in this series are generally of unidentified subjects. Lack of adequate information on the content of the photographs led to the decision to subdivide them chronologically. The vast majority of the photographs are black-and-white depictions of School of Architecture faculty and students. The collection of oversized mounted color photographs are primarily of campus scenes, though there are black-and-white photographs of architectural students circa 1920-1930. The Sutton Hall photographs, which are also oversized color prints, show various architectural features of Sutton Hall. Another series of mounted photographs documents the construction of Goldsmith Hall, 1931-1933.

Series G: Art and Artifacts, undated
Series Abstract
The majority of the material in this series comprises a collection of hundreds of lantern slides depicting architectural and archeological scenes. The lantern slides, housed in an antique wooden cabinet and as yet unprocessed, were used by faculty members as a valuable visual teaching resource for class lectures. The Goldsmith renovation model is a 3-D architectural model created prior to the construction of the Goldsmith Hall addition.

Series H: Unprocessed Material, ca. 1910-2000
Series Abstract
The Unprocessed Material series consists of one legal-size archival box of clippings and five binders of mostly photocopies; they are in addition to the unprocessed lantern slides in Series G. The clippings file contains newspaper articles ranging from the 1940s to 2000 on a variety of subjects such as the University of Texas, the School of Architecture, and architecture in general. Five binders contain a total of 8 linear inches of photocopied articles, clippings and notes concerning the School of Architecture, arranged under subject, chronological and biographical headings. These materials date from the 1910s to 1980s and appear to have been intentionally compiled as a history of the School of Architecture and its key faculty over the years.

Subgroup 2: Architecture Student and Alumni Records, 1913-1996, undated

Series I: General, 1963, 1983-1992, undated
Series Abstract
The Architecture Student Government Records subseries contains just a few scattered pieces of documentation concerning elections for the Architecture Student Council. Among the records documenting student competitions are a TSA (Texas Society of Architects) design competition and a proposed renewal (1992) of the School of Architecture's tradition of an annual "Box Kite" competition.

Series J: Association of Student Architects, 1930-1945, undated
Series Abstract
The records of the Association of Student Architects (ASA) are few in number. They primarily consist of scrapbooks and colorful invitations documenting the Annual Architects' Wind-Up Ball, a social function organized by SOA students. The telegram (1930) is an amusing joke telegram whereby the sender pretended to be Ptah, the ancient Egyptian architect of the Nile and the School's patron saint. Ptah's presence, whether in the form of students dressed up as the Egyptian figure, or through his depiction on association materials, is a recurring theme of ASA events and activities.

Series K: Tau Sigma Delta, Architectural Honor Society, 1937-1968, undated
Series Abstract
Tau Sigma Delta was the local chapter of a national honor society for architecture and the allied arts. The bulk of this series consists of correspondence regarding both national and local chapter activities and administration. The membership records include dozens of completed membership cards from the 1930s to the 1960s, and several records documenting the chapter's initiation ritual, which consisted in part of asking pledges to provide a creative answer to a question with an architectural theme. This initiation ritual was known as the initiatory presentation.

Series L: Student Architects' Wives Association (SAWA), 1957-1970, undated
Series Abstract
The records of the Student Architects' Wives Association were originally housed in a single notebook according to year. The original order has been maintained. The President's records consist of rosters, minutes and notes concerning SAWA meetings and planned events, such as the graduation banquet. The Women's Architectural League records, though housed in the same notebook as the SAWA, belong to a separate but related local association. The records consist primarily of newsletters from the 1960s that document the League's many activities, such as raising scholarship funds, and the annual Christmas party. The Women's Architectural League records also contain a register of the children of architecture students.

Series N: Student Work, 1950-1984, undated
Series Abstract
This series contains course work by individual students, such as a study of Canterbury Cathedral by Donald Denson submitted to Professor Blake Alexander. There are also several projects by groups of students, such as the Main Street Project in Hillsboro, Texas. The group projects were usually packaged as amateur publications. The student assessment, written in 1967, is a collection of constructive criticisms aimed at improving the School of Architecture. The assessment was submitted to the faculty by a group of over 20 students. The photographic materials are generally unidentified negatives labeled as student work.

Series O: Alumni, 1913-1996, undated
Series Abstract
This series primarily consists of case files which document the work of former School of Architecture students. Many students, such as Bartlett Cocke, kept in contact with the School and sent in articles or brochures from the architecture firms at which they were employed. Alumni publications have changed frequently over the years. The earliest publication in this series is Ptah, named for the ancient architect of the Nile, and the School's mascot. The Alumni publication subseries and school reunion materials, including one videotape, are evidence of the School's contact with former School of Architecture students.
