A. C. Lenert was a member of Waul's Texas Legion during the Civil War and was present at the
battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi. This legion of Texas troops played a key role in
the defense of Vicksburg. With the exception of one company, the legion was captured
in the fall at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. A. C. Lenert is listed on the Confederate
Parole list as a 2nd Lieutenant in Waul's Texas Legion, Infantry, Company E. After
the war, it is believed that A. C. Lenert returned to Texas and may have been living
in or near LaGrange by the 1890s.

Scope and Contents Note

This collection consists of a photocopy of A. C. Lenert's memorandum book and a typed
transcript of the page narrative. Covering the years 1861-1863, the 20-page
handwitten book includes Lenert's description of Waul's Texas Legion in the battle
of Vicksburg, May-June, 1863. This is a daily log of the shelling, artillery
attacks, and the intensity of fighting, as well as a record of cuts in rations for
soldiers as the siege continues. The last few pages of the book record financial
records in ledger form, which are not included in the transcript.
