Organization History

Founded in 1927 as the Houston Junior College, the institution became a four-year university in 1934 and changed its name to the University of Houston. Houston oilman and philanthropist Hugh Roy Cullen funded many of the initial building projects on campus. Following the Second World War, enrollment at UH reached record numbers due to returning veterans and the G.I. Bill. Increased enrollment necessitated more classroom and laboratory space. A construction boom started on campus during the early 1950s and did not slow until the early 1970s. During this period several buildings and additions to existing structures augmented the University of Houston.

Scope and Contents

The UH Architectural Drawings contain blueprints and copies of blueprints from buildings within the University of Houston System. Items in the collection date from 1949 through 1996. The bulk of the architectural drawings were created during the 1960s and 1970s and deal primarily with the first (Blue Wing) and second (Brown Wing) additions to the M.D. Anderson Library. Other blueprints of the Library include the Original Building, Floor-Specific Plans, Miscellaneous drawings, Furniture and Stack Layouts, UH Branch Libraries, and System Libraries Plans. Additional blueprints pertain to the Fine Arts Center and Physical Education Facilities on campus.

Most material is located in map cases in the Reading Room. The collection is arranged chronologically, whenever possible, within the drawers, boxes, and rolls. When more than one sub-series (such as a floor within the Library) occupies a drawer items are arranged chronologically within the sub-series. Drawings of individual floors are arranged in ascending order and chronologically within the sub-series.

Requests for permission to publish material from the collection should be discussed with the University Archivist.

Due to the oversize nature of the materials photocopies will not be made.
