Historical Note:

The Honors Program was established in the late 1940s along with a governing committee and council. In an October 25, 1947 meeting of the Committee on Honors Courses and Graduation with Honors, the committee recommended “ a) That honors courses be defined as courses set up for superior students and the content be more extensive, more intensive and more profound than that of the regular courses. The requirements in honors courses will be on a higher academic level, b) That the purpose of the honors course be to make available to the superior students work of the highest caliber …e) That honors courses shall be limited to the freshman year at this time.” [1]

Since its start the Honors College has grown to become an important part of the University of Houston student experience. The Honors College invokes a sense of community amongst its students and faculty through exclusive amenities, a dynamic learning and mentoring environment, and special privileges.

Through a challenging curriculum taught by world-renowned faculty, Honors students receive a well-balanced education as well as one-on-one mentoring and personalized academic advising — all leading to success.

The Honors College Mission & Vision website identifies its Vision: "The Honors College at the University of Houston is a nationally recognized, intellectually stimulating learning community. As a vibrant, leading presence within the University, the Honors College attracts highly talented and motivated students and educators to a collegial environment where tradition is honored and possibilities are both created and realized."
