A Guide to the Neel Family Civil War Papers, 1833-1900
Biographical NoteT.C. Neel (1825-1863), signer of the Texas Articles of Secession and member of the Texas House and Senate, was born in Sparta, Georgia in 1825. Prior to emigrating to Texas, he was educated and graduated from Mercer University. In 1855, Neel purchased land for a plantation in Ellis County, Texas and moved there with his wife, daughter, and about 80 enslaved persons. T.C. Neel actively supported the Confederacy with money and supplies as well as through government service. Neel’s wife, Willia Latimer Neel, ran the plantation during his absences and after his death. Neel died in September 1863, and is buried in the Waxahachie Texas Cemetery. Sources
