            <head>History of the Association</head>
<p> The American Association of University Women (AAUW) was formed as the Association of Collegiate Alumnae (ACA) in 1882.
Their mission was to "unite alumnae of different institution for practical educational work." Within two years, there were 356 members in ACA.
Eventually, members began creating local groups called branches; Washington, D.C. was the first branch and other branches were created accordingly. </p>
<p> The first branch formed in Texas was the Dallas branch in 1908, under the name The College Club. In 1912, in order to communicate more effectively with
branches, ACA divided the country into sections (now called regions),
each with an elected national officer called Regional Vice President. The state of Texas fell within the Southwest Central Section. During WWI,
the difficulty in holding conferences among the sections drove the need for state divisions.
The impulse to form a state division in Texas originally came from the second branch formed in Texas, the San Antonio branch, established in 1909,
under the Southern Association of College Women (SACW). Later in 1921, SACW joined ACA in becoming AAUW. In order to discuss forming a state division,
the San Antonio branch asked each Texas branch to send one delegate to the State Teacher's Association meeting in the fall of 1924. Unfortunately, not enough
delegates attended and no organization was formed. Again, in 1925, the San Antonio branch called for delegates to attend the state Teacher's Association meeting,
but again no state organization was formed. </p>
<p>The first Southwest Central Regional conference held in 1926 was the final impetus in organizing a
Texas state division. At the conference in April 1926, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Mrs. Jessie Daniel Ames was elected chairman of the temporary
organization, and the first convention of the Texas Division was arranged for October 8 and 9, 1926 at the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas. At the time of first convention,
the Texas Division consisted of 10 charter branches, including Amarillo, Austin, Commerce, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Georgetown, Lubbock,
San Antonio, and Waco and contained fewer than 600 members. Since then, AAUW Texas has grown to 17 branches and more than 3,000 members.
AAUW Texas prides itself in its work to create educational and equity opportunities for women and girls.

            <head>Provenance</head>
<p>AAUW Texas State Board first began depositing their inactive files at Texas Woman's University around 1948 after
Dr. Autrey Nell Wiley, member of AAUW and professor of English, secured a permanent repository in the Library through Dr. Hubbard,
president of Texas Woman's University. Between the years of 1948 and 1980 the inactive files of AAUW Texas moved from the Library to the old
                Household Arts building to the Arts and Sciences building and back to the Library. Over the years, the repository accumulated thousands of historical records;
including minutes, correspondence, and memorabilia dating all the way back to the beginning of the organization in 1926. In 1980, Elizabeth Snapp,
President of the Denton Branch AAUW and Assistant Director of TWU's Library, began organizing the State's inactive files and preparing them as an archival
collection. In addition, in 1980, AAUW Texas Branches began sending in their inactive files to add to the State archive. Currently, the AAUW-TX collection
contains over 200 cubic feet, including state records as well as records from more than 60 branches. For more information, see the "History of the AAUW Texas Archives at Texas Woman's University" in
Box #1 and Addendum C at the end of this inventory.

<scopecontent><p> One of the first mentions of a "repository for the files of the Texas Division of the American Association of University Women"
is in a letter from Dr. Margaret Lee Wiley, AAUW Texas State Recording Secretary and President-Elect, to Mrs. Clay McClellan, President, on April
16, 1945. The letter states, "A repository for A. A. U. W. files has been promised, and I am letting you know immediately so that you will not worry
too much about the enormity of material to be passed on to me." Unfortunately, the letter does not tell where the repository is or who promised it.</p>
<p>The next mention of AAUW Texas' repository is in 1948 in Dr. Pearl Ponsford's Annual Report of the Texas Division. In the report, it notes that with
the assistance of Dr. Autrey Nell Wiley the board was able to obtain a permanent repository for inactive files at the Library of the Texas State College
for Women in Denton. The report also states, "A member of the Denton Branch will be asked to serve as keeper of the inactive files." The member of
the Denton Branch chosen to serve as the keeper of the inactive files appears to be Miss Ruby Averitt, who writes in a letter dated May 23, 1949, that
she received the check for $100 to purchase a cabinet for the AAUW records.</p>
<p> A little over a year later, in a letter dated August 28, 1950 to Miss May Jones, Mrs. Marion Roberts writes that
Miss Averitt died of cancer and therefore someone would need to take her place. She subsequently recommends Miss Ada
Lummis, Miss Reba Bucklew and Mrs. Mation de Coliguy, all of Texas Woman's University. Although these names were
brought up at the October 6, 1950 Board of Directors meeting, none took the place of Miss Averitt and in March 1951 the AAUW
Texas inactive files were "still" in the basement of the Bralley Memorial Library at TSCW.</p>
<p> According to a letter dated January 9, 1951, a Committee on the Repository, consisting of Miss Dorothy Porter, Chairman, Miss
Florence Langford, and Dr. Autrey Nell Wiley, was appointed by AAUW Texas President Miss May Jones to assist with setting up
a repository at TSCW. On April 27, 1951, during the 14th Biennial Convention, Miss May Jones recommended that "the Texas
Division study carefully the plan of setting up a central office for the Texas State Division with provisions for an Executive Secretary-Treasurer."</p>
<p>Later that year, AAUW Texas President Mrs. Vera Maxwell requested the use of rooms 302 and 304 in the Home Economics
building (also called the old Household Arts building) in a letter dated June 29, 1951
to Dr. Guinn, President of TSCW.
In a subsequent letter from Dr. Guinn, dated July 6, 1951, the use
of room 302 as the office for AAUW Texas' inactive files was approved, with provisional use of 304 for board meetings.</p>
<p>The inactive files then moved from the Library's basement to the old Household Arts building. In September 1951,
Mrs. Vera Maxwell sent out questionnaires to all past Presidents asking what they thought should be done with their new "Headquarters."
The first Board meeting held in the new Headquarters in room 304 was on Oct. 12, 1951. At that time, the board carried the motion not to exceed
$1,000 for the Headquarters office and to set aside $500 for Headquarters maintenance. In April 1952, the Committee on the Repository, also called
the Headquarters Committee, presented their report and made recommendations to the Board. The Committee reported that they had purchased one
desk, one desk chair, one steel filing cabinet, one office chair, one table for a typewriter, one chair for typing, and a book called "How to File and Index"
by Bertha M. Weeks. Also listed were suggested needs, including a fan, typewriter, Venetian blinds, dictionary, miscellaneous office supplies, lamp,
and rug. For "keeping the office open," the committee offered two suggestions; first, that they could employ a member of the Denton AAUW Branch to
work part time and second that they could employ a student, preferably a graduate student. The Board carried the motion to recommend the first
suggestion of employing a Denton Branch member. But, according to the minutes of AAUW Texas' 15th Biennial Convention on May 1, 1953,
a student at TSCW named Charlotte Wood Schrader had, at the time, been employed at Headquarters for four months. There is also another
discrepancy regarding Headquarters in the 1966 Texas Division Handbook, which states that Headquarters was not set up on the campus of
                    TWU until 1953."</p>
<p> In November 1959, Historian Charlotte Wyatt visited the archives at TWU, which were still located in the Home Economics building.
Former President Miss May Jones, Dr. Autrey Nell Wiley, and Miss Dorothy Porter accompanied Mrs. Wyatt. In February 1960, Mrs.
Wyatt and Miss Jones reported to the board their trip to the archives, including the history of the archives, and made recommendations
on the future of the archives. The most notable recommendation was that excessive duplication of files should be avoided and that "Unless
this Board begins to make a start on such a policy, with the rapid growth of the Division, very soon we shall outgrow the courtesy file room now
                    afforded us."</p>
<p> According to an update on Headquarters dated May 28, 1971, the AAUW archives were
located in room 229 in the Arts and Sciences building. This means that sometime between 1959
and 1971 the archives were moved from the Home Economics building to the Arts and Sciences building. The update also notes that the AAUW Archive
Supervisor was Mabelle Kalmbach and includes an invoice and description of the archives.'</p>
<p>In April 1977, the "AAUW Record Room" moved from room 229 to room
236 in the Arts and Sciences building. Mabelle Kalmbach, still the AAUW Archive Supervisor,
kept the key to the room. Sometime between 1977 and 1980 the archives moved again, this time
from the Arts and Sciences building back to the Library.</p>
<p>In 1980, TWU purchased the AAUW national archives on microfilm.
In March 1980, AAUW Texas President Alice Church and Historian Betty Coley visited the archives with Elizabeth Snapp,
President of the Denton Branch and Assistant Director of TWU's Library, and Mabelle Kalmbach, still the AAUW Texas Archive Supervisor.
In 1980, the State Division began collecting branch records and depositing them at TWU. In a Memo from Elizabeth Snapp to Jean
Glasgow dated March 24, 1982 she wrote, "The 1928-51 holdings appear to be reasonably complete. We have records for the following years:
                        1928-51, 1957, 1959-61, 1966, 1971, 1975, 1978-79. The latter years are incomplete.
In 1986, the AAUW Texas collection consisted of 172 boxes of Branch and Division records. Also in 1986, the new Blagg-Huey
Library opened, but it is unclear when the AAUW Texas archives moved from the old Library to the new one.
