Biographical Sketch

Chester Alwyn Barr Jr. is a Professor Emeritus from the History Department of Texas Tech University. He was born in 1938 in Austin, Texas, and received a Bachelor's of Arts degree in 1959, a Master's of Arts degree in 1961, and a Ph.D. in 1966 from the University of Texas at Austin. He also witnessed the UT tower shooting on August 1, 1966, in which 14 people were killed by Charles Whitman.

Barr began his teaching career as Assistant Professor at Purdue University from 1966-1969. He joined the Texas Tech faculty in 1969. During his 36 year tenure at Texas Tech he served as History Department Chair from 1978-1985. He has secured multiple awards for teaching, research, and leadership at Texas Tech. In the 1992-1993 academic year he served as the president of the Texas State Historical Association. In 2001, Barr received the Outstanding Researcher Award from the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas Tech. In 2005, he obtained the Faculty Distinguished Leadership Award from the Texas Tech Association of Parents. Barr was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters in 2011 and his primary research focus is on the history of the Civil War, Reconstruction, the American South, and African Americans.

The collection contains correspondence, various committee and council materials and minutes, course offerings, publications and office files pertaining to the activities of the Texas Tech University History Department.
