Biographical Sketch

Terms in office for the various Texas Tech University Administrations represented in this collection are Dr. Bradford Knapp (1932-1938), Clifford Bartlett Jones (1938-1944), William M. Whyburn (1944-1948), and Dossie Marion Wiggins (1948-1952).

Dr. Bradford Knapp attended Iowa Agricultural College (now Iowa State University) and the University of Michigan. He served as president of Oklahoma A and M College (now Oklahoma State University), president of Alabama Polytechnic Institute at Auburn, and vice-president of the Southern Agricultural Workers. He became the second president of Texas Technological College in 1932 and held that position until he died suddenly from a heart attack on June 11, 1938.

Clifford B. Jones attended Yale, became the assistant manager of the Swenson Ranch, and a was banker in Spur, Texas. Initially, Jones served on the Board of Directors for Texas Technological College, and was chairman of that entity from 1927-1938. He became the college's third president in 1938, despite not having a college degree. Jones lasting legacy is the Clifford B. and Audrey Jones Memorial Stadium, which to this day is utilized for Red Raider football games.

William M. Whyburn attended North Texas State College and the University of Texas. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin while teaching at Texas Technological College. He was the first president of Texas Technological College to have an earned doctorate and the first native Texan. Whyburn was among the original faculty members when Tech opened its doors, leaving to pursue graduate studies, and later returning to Texas Technological College in 1944 as president. He served until 1948 when he was appointed as Kenan Professor of Mathematics and department chair at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Dossie Marion Wiggins attended Hardin-Simmons University where he graduated magna cum laude in 1919. Wiggins served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He was a principal, coach, and superintendent for several public school districts in the Texas panhandle region. Dr. Wiggins graduated with his PhD from Yale University. Prior to assuming the position as president of Texas Technological College, Dr. Wiggins was Dean of Students and Professor of Education at Hardin-Simmons from 1926 to 1935. He was president of Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy (now University of Texas at El Paso) from 1935 until 1948. He was named president of Texas Technological College from 1948 until 1952 when he resigned and assumed a position in banking. Dr. Wiggins tenure at Texas Tech saw many changes being made to the physical campus. He put a master landscape plan into place, saw the streets and sidewalks paved. He was instrumental in the construction of the Student Union and Holden Hall. Dr. Wiggins also saw the expansion of the graduate program to include doctorates.
