         <head>Biographical Sketch</head>
         <p>The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) at Texas 
			Tech offered both bachelor degrees and teacher certification.  It administered 
			the University Interscholastic League athletic conferences, dance programs, and 
			teaching and coaching workshops.  The men's and women's units were combined in 
			1976 in response to centralization and Title IX.  A master's degree in sports 
			medicine was added in 1981.</p>

         <head>Scope and Content</head>
         <p>The collection contains mainly administrative materials, including 
			correspondence, meeting minutes, faculty reports and information, tenure files, 
			degree requirements and curriculum, and registration statistics.</p>
			<p>About 75 percent of this collection was purged using the Texas Tech Records 
			Retention Schedule.  Many of these files contained personal information on 
			students, such as grades and social security numbers, and various job 
			applications.  A records disposition log was completed.</p>
