Biographical Sketch

Graduate education at Texas Tech dates back to 1927 when graduate courses were taught in the school of Liberal Arts. The Graduate School was officially inaugurated in 1935. As of 2016, the Graduate School of Texas Tech University offers some 60 doctoral degrees, over 100 master's degrees, and more 50 graduate certificate programs.

Scope and Content

The collection consists primarily of the records and correspondence of J. Knox Jones Jr. (1929-1992). He received his PhD. in Zoology. Dr. Jones came to Texas Tech in 1971 as the Dean of Graduate Studies and served as President for Research and Graduate studies from 1974-1984. In 1984 Dr. Jones returned to teaching full time.

Four small donations from the Graduate School were combined to create this collection. The bulk of the materials date to Dr. Jones’ tenure. There are two series. The first series is that of general office files from the Graduate School. The second is correspondence arranged alphabetically as was the original order.

Organization

The collection is organized into two series: Dr. Jones' files and correspondence.
