Biographical Sketch

Thomas Jefferson "Tom" Griffith (1923-1993) was an attorney who practiced law in Lubbock, Texas, from 1952 until his death in 1993. He earned his law degree from the University of North Carolina in 1950, and married Nancy Louise Ward Griffith in Falls Church, VA, in 1951. Tom was a Marine, and moved with his family to Lubbock following the Korean conflict. Nancy worked in the Architecture and Philosophy departments at Texas Tech University before leaving to work with Tom at his private law practice. Among his many professional activities, he monitored unlicensed practice of law in Texas and contributed to Marine Corps studies and training.

Scope and Content

The Thomas J. Griffith Papers bulks with legal documents, correspondence, and similar material related to Griffith’s career as a lawyer in Lubbock, Texas. Prominent cases include “The Catalyst (Texas Tech University’s underground student newspaper) v. TTU Board of Trustees,” “Lubbock Civil Liberties Union v. Lubbock ISD,” and several cases of the Unification Church versus local communities.

Extensive correspondence with his family, most notably Sarah Griffith, are also included, dating from the 1970s through 2000s. Other correspondence, both personal and professional, date from the 1950s to 1990s.

Finally, assorted periodicals, teaching materials, audio/visual materials (primarily cassette tapes), awards, plaques, and similar material are present. A statue of a student with a Catalyst, along with an accompanying note card containing the text of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, is also included.
