Biographical Sketch

Thomas T. Herndon, from St. Jo, Texas, in Montague County, was the son of a local doctor. He was a lawyer and worked for the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway Company of Texas. Evelyn Rice Hyde Herndon lived in Sherman in Grayson County, Texas.


Scope and Content

The collection is comprised of letters received by Evelyn Rice Hyde Herndon and bulks with correspondence from Thomas T. Herndon during their courtship with lesser amounts following their marriage. The correspondence provides a glimpse of the couple’s interests and activities in north Texas in the early 20th century, including some related to Thomas’ work for the railroad, family illness, temperance, oil speculation, and contemplation of moving to west Texas.
