Biographical Sketch

Nephtalí De León is a Chicano writer and illustrator of poetry, children's stories, and essays. Born in Laredo, Texas, in 1945, the son of migrant workers, De León published his first book, Chicanos: Our Background and Our Pride while still a senior in high school. Later works included poetry and plays, and he also created mural art and children's stories. De León’s work has been published in Mexico, France, the U.S., and Spain, with his stories being translated into several other languages (German, Russian, Chinese, and Vietnamese).


Scope and Content

The Nephtalí De León Papers bulks with manuscripts, illustrations, and drafts of prose and poetry authored by De León and others. A selection of Spanish-language newspapers, El Editor and La Voz de Texas, are also present.
