Cleo Dawson is the well-known author of
She Came to the Valley, which was
published in 1943. It was later made into a movie. Born in 1902 in Oklahoma
City, she moved to Texas and attended school in Mission, Texas, a small town
close to McAllen. During her college years, she attended Baylor College,
Southern Methodist University (1922), and University of Kentucky. Miss Dawson
taught Spanish at the Mission High School. In 1926 she married and moved to
Lexington, Kentucky. In addition to writing, she worked as a guest psychologist
for a number of years appearing on the Merv Griffith Show.
This collection contains manuscripts of Cleo Dawson's works. They
include two screenplays, nine original manuscripts for four different novels
and their revisions and a thesis. Her thesis was on women prisoners in Kentucky
