Biographical Sketch

John W. Mecom, Jr. is an independent oil man of Houston, Texas and the former owner of the New Orleans Saints football team. He owns and operates John W. Mecom Company which is primarily involved in real estate investments and oil gas exploration and production.

Born in 1940, he attended the University of Oklahoma and played football for the Sooners. After graduation he joined his father, John, Sr., who was a succesful independent oil man. His father started out in the oil business by borrowing $700 from his mother in 1936 and an oil rig from his father. Within two years he had staked himself to $100,000 in assets and capital. By the 1950s he was described as having owned "everything worth owning" in downtown Houston.

John, Jr. followed with his own achievements in the oil and gas industry, and in various real estate ventures. He also branched out into professional sports with a special interest in racing and football. In the early 1960s he formed his own racing team that successfully competed throughout the U. S. and had such drivers as A. J. Foyt. In 1966 Graham Hill raced his car to victory at the Indianapolis 500. His son, John III, continues the racing tradition with his Heritage Motorsports group that races Indy-type cars. In 1967 John Mecom, Jr. purchased the New Orleans Saints National Football League (NFL) franchise for $8.5 million becoming, at age 27, the youngest franchise owner in NFL history. While guiding the club through its early years, Mecom was an active member of the Gulf coast and Louisiana community. His activities included promoting the construction of the Superdome (completed in 1975), working with local charities, and serving as a major sponsor of the New Orleans Symphony. In 1985, he sold the Saints.
