Biographical Sketch

Alexander Averill Slaughter was a rancher and entrepreneur. Born in 1881, he was the third son of Colonel C. C. Slaughter and Carrie Averill, C. C.'s second wife. He served in an official capacity in the family-owned-and-operated C. C. Slaughter Cattle Company. Upon his death in 1931, his widow, Dorothy L. Slaughter assumed direction of the estate and participated in the development of the petroleum industry in West Texas.

Born in 1837 in Sabine County, Texas, Christopher Columbus (C. C.) established frontier ranch in Palo Pinto County, Texas, in 1857 with his father, George Webb Slaughter, and his brothers. During the civil war, C. C. served in the frontier militia and in the Texas Rangers. Afterwards, he drove cattle over Chisholm Trail and later moved operations to West Texas where, by 1905, he owned 40,000 cattle and controlled over one million acres. Before his death in 1919, he had founded the American National Bank of Dallas (1884), and cofounded the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (1877), the Texas Baptist Education Commission (1897) and the Baylor Hospital of Dallas, Texas (1904).

Scope and Contents

The collection contains correspondence, financial material, legal records, daily journals and cash books, literary productions, some printed material and photographs. A large portion of the materials deals with the minute details relevant to the daily operation of a ranching enterprise in West Texas and eastern New Mexico, and later (post-1937), the development of the petroleum industry in West Texas. The operations of the ranch under the supervision of Christopher Columbus (C. C.) and his son, Alexander Averill, are the focus of the papers within this collection.
