The materials were donated by the Geosciences department of Texas Tech
University. These photos may be used to determine land use in 1965, urban
development such as the construction of Loop 289, and in conjunction with
information from other time periods to detect changes in land use and land
cover over a period of time either prior to or post 1965. They are black and
white and were taken in the fall after much of the vegetation has gone dormant
for winter. Therefore use of these photos to determine vegetative cover will be
limited. These photos are fairly large scale (1 inch = 502 feet). Among the
smallest objects that can be resolved are buildings, houses, vehicles, and
individual trees. A magnifier should be used by the researcher interested in
objects of this size.
The collection contains 227 black and white aerial photo-maps of
Lubbock County, Texas, taken during the fall of 1965. The scale used is l
inch=502 feet. Each map represents a ground area of approximately three square
miles and is mounted on heavy particle board, 31 × 31 inches. Three are
paper copies, not the original image. Photos 1-267 are dated 10-31-65, photos
269-498 are dated 11-01-65, and photos 505-517 are dated 11-13-65.
The scales used are- 1:6034, 10.5 inches = 1 mile, 1 inch= 502 feet, 1
foot = 6034 feet.

The itemized image list includes the photo number, date of the photo,
and notes highlighting features and land use. These descriptions are not
intended as an exhaustive review of individual photographs, but may be of use
to the researcher in locating areas of interest. |

An index-map of Lubbock County includes line of flight, direction of
flight and sequence of photographs. Some photographs are outlined on this
index-map to show precise location of photo. Where only a photo number is
shown, approximate location of photograph is indicated. Where no number is
shown, the location of photos can be projected using the information located in
the margins of the index-map. |
|
Photo numbers printed on the individual photographs are always located
in the Northwest corner of the photograph. Generally, the photographs have
approximately one-third overlap on the line of flight axis, and some overlap
occurs across flight lines. Flight lines alternate between East to West and
West to East. Each line of flight contains approximately 15 photographs. Photo
numbers within flight lines increase from North to South. |
