Biographical Sketch

Ed Havran, a long time resident of Colleyville, Texas, was an alumnus of Texas Tech University who had worked with the Texas dairy industry from 1947-1984. He and his wife, Muriel, had collected material from the Texas dairy industry for thirty years. Most of Havran's life had been involved with the dairy industry. His father sold milk in Oklahoma during the 1920's and later moved the Havran family to Texas. As a member of the Future Farmers of America, Havran showed dairy cattle for competition. He received his master's degree in agricultural economics from Texas Tech and served as a vocational agriculture teacher at one time. As a result of his participation in the dairy business, he was an active member of the Texas Jersey Cattle Club and founder of the Texas Dairy Heritage Foundation.

Scope and Contents

The Havran Papers located at Texas Tech University are mainly in manuscript form and photographs. Also included are Texas oral history interviews conducted by Havran with individuals such as B. The heritage material is subdivided into correspondence, financial, legal, literary productions, printed, and scrapbook material.

Organization

The Havran collection is arranged into three series:
Dairy Heritage Foundation is the first part of Havran's Papers. As a result of his accumulation of information, Havran, in collaboration with Bob Claussen from the Tarrant County Junior College, began soliciting the public for any information concerning the past history of the Texas dairy industry. He founded the Texas Dairy Heritage Foundation in 1986 for the sole purpose of preserving Texas dairy records and documenting Texas dairy history. The Tarrant County Junior College-Northwest Campus had in the past displayed some museum pieces from Havran's Collection.
The Texas Jersey Cattle Club, representing the second part, is an affiliate of the American Jersey Cattle Club and is an organization consisting of Jersey cattle raisers. Havran had been a member and at one time a manager of the organization. While a member, he collected breeder records, membership mailing lists, and accounting records. This particular part of the collection is dated between 1906-1990 and is subdivided into correspondence, financial, legal, literary productions, printed material, and scrapbook material.
The third series is Photographs, 1908-1986 and undated. It comprises of boxes 14-15 and is filed in alphabetical order. Included are mostly prints, a few slides, and some negatives pertaining to both the Texas Dairy Heritage Foundation and the Texas Jersey Cattle Club. Most photographs show Havran's participation in the dairy industry. Some however are collected historic prints from past dairy companies such as Metzger Dairy and the Lily Ice Cream Company
For purposes of better organization and preservation, some items such as books, oversize material, films, and cassettes were transferred to other areas.
