Biographical Sketch

Entrepreneur, environmental activist and author Paul Hawken was born in 1946 in California. His work focuses on environmentally and socially conscious business practices. Hawken co-founded Smith & Hawken, a garden lifestyle brand, and some of the first natural food companies relying solely on sustainable agriculture. He also founded a research firm, the Natural Capital Institute, and the open source networking platform Wiser Earth to foster the work of those concerned with the environment and social justice. A highly-sought after speaker, Hawken has delivered keynote addresses at environmental conferences, business summits and universities across the globe. His books include Blessed Unrest (2007), Natural Capitalism (1999), The Ecology of Commerce (1993), and Growing a Business (1987),on which was based the PBS series exploring socially responsive companies. His work has appeared in and/or been highlighted by Resurgence, Wall Street Journal, Orion, Utne Reader, Mother Jones, Boston Globe and others.
