Bill McKibben, born on December 8, 1960, is a freelance writer
currently living with his family (daughter Sophie and wife, the writer Sue
Halpern) in Ripton, Vermont. The family formerly lived in the Adirondack
Mountains in New York State. McKibben’s writings concern the impact of society
and culture on the global environment. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from
Harvard College in 1982. McKibben wrote over 400 articles for the "Talk of the
Town" column featured in The New Yorker magazine during the 1980s. His honors
include Lyndhurst Fellowship (1988-1991), Guggenheim Fellowship (1993), Lannan
Prize for Nonfiction (2000) and election as a fellow of the American Academy of
Arts and Sciences (2011). In 2007, McKibben founded Step it Up! He is a scholar
in residence at Middlebury College.
