		<head>Biographical Sketch</head> 
		<p>Barry Lopez is an essayist, author, and short story writer. His books
		  include <emph render="italic">Arctic Dreams</emph>, for which he received the
		  National Book Award, and <emph render="italic">Of Wolves and Men</emph>, a
		  National Book Award finalist, as well as several collections of short stories
		  and two collections of essays. He has received fellowships from the American
		  Academy of Arts and Letters, the John Burroughs Society, the Orion Society, and
		  other institutions. In his nonfiction, Mr. Lopez writes often about the
		  relationship between physical landscape and human culture. In his fiction, he
		  frequently addresses issues of intimacy, ethics, and identity. His work has
		  been widely anthologized and translated into thirteen languages. He travels
		  widely and has collaborated with a number of artists on a variety of projects
		  in theater, music, and the fine arts. Since 2003 he has been Visiting
		  University Scholar at Texas Tech University. He lives on the McKenzie River in
		  rural western Oregon. </p>
