Biographical Sketch

Bufalo Beano, a Lubbock retailer specializing in kites, skateboards, jewelry and urban decor, was opened in 1968. It was purchased for $80,000 and operated for 30 years by Gary King and his wife Karen. King was prominent in the promotion of kite-flying, making presentations on the topic and sponsoring tournaments across West Texas.

Throughout the early 1980s, the store fell afoul of the Texas drug paraphernalia laws and had its merchandise confiscated by Lubbock County authorities. The shop's location at 8th Street and University was condemned by the City and bulldozed in 2004 to create a median for pedestrian and bike trails (never built) as part of McDougal Properties' Overton Park development.
