Biographical Sketch

Billy Faier, born in Brooklyn in 1930 and raised in Woodstock, got to Texas as quickly as he could, bringing his banjo to Marathon in the Trans-Pecos. Before that, however, during the folk music revival he set the standard for the five-string, recording for Riverside Records beginning in 1957 and performing on Broadway in The Unsinkable Molly Brown. He traveled and performed with the likes of Woody Guthrie, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Jack Kerouac, and others. Pete Seeger praised his picking, and he cut two albums with John Sebastian.

The "Folkmusic Fanzine" called Caravan was founded by the novelist Lee (Hoffman) Shaw in 1957, following her original effort called Chooog 2-5. Originally produced on typewriter and mimeograph, Caravan was distributed "FREE FOR THE ASKING" in Greenwich Village. Faier, who also offered a twice-weekly program on KPFA-AM radio, appeared on the cover of the May 1958 issue and eventually took over as editor for a half-dozen issues. Hoffman-Shaw said, "I didn't want to put out a scholarly publication or a professional one....so I sold it to him." Then she started Gardyloo for six issues, largely to promote the New Lost City Ramblers.

The CD in the collection was recorded by Lubbock folk cowboy musician Andy Hedges at Billy’s home in Marathon, featuring Faier talking briefly about then singing to his banjo accompaniment. The song is “The Horse with a Union Label”, taught to him by his mother, who was a communist organizer in the 1920s.

Scope and Content

The Faier photographs and sound recording have been digitized. The electronic files are designated within parentheses in the listings below. Other than as noted, the collection is in good condition and is part of the Crossroads of Music archive.
