Biographical Sketch

Joseph Eugene Owen was born in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas on July 10, 1948. He attended Texas A and M University and the College of Oceaneering in California after service in the US Navy. He trained to be a commercial diver with expertise in photography and demolitions. He worked in the oil industry and helped create the underwater bridge inspection program of the Texas Department of Transportation.

Owen was instrumental in helping Duke University develop dive tables still in use today. Certified as an Emergency Medical Technician, he also put in thousands of hours as a volunteer in the emergency room at Austin's Brackenridge Hospital before his passing on July 23, 2012. The collection is a gift from his friend and heir Kathryn Moore.

Scope and Content

The collection contains 1/4-inch reel-to-reel audio tapes made in various Dallas and Austin music clubs, especially the Rubaiyat coffee house on McKinney Avenue in Dallas. Featured artists include County Line, B. W. Stevenson, Bill and Bonnie Hearne, and Michael Martin Murphey and Boomer Castleman. There are also commercial and home duplicate tapes. The collection is in good condition and is part of the Crossroads of Music archive.
