Biographical Sketch

A self-taught guitarist with Nashville credits, Robert Alan "Lanny" Fiel took a degree in music performance and played viola with and served as music librarian for the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. He fiddled with the Yellowhouse Band before he created the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band, touring it throughout the Southwest as a teaching tool for young musicians, especially in the Lubbock Independent School District. In 1989 Fiel began taping The Roots Music Show, which aired on KOHM-FM radio, an affiliate of Texas Tech University, through 1995.

Fiel is the author of The Essential Texas Fiddle and, with Frankie McWhorter, Play It Lazy: The Bob Wills Fiddle Legacy, and Reading Music Naturally for Fiddle, as well as the co-arranger with Joe Stephenson of the transcription works Texas Solo Fiddle and Texas Twin Fiddles. He owned and operated Lanny Fiel Productions for a number of years, producing and marketing recordings of West Texas musicians including Frankie McWhorter and Buck Ramsey.
