Biographical Sketch

The Hancocks are a very influential musical family to the West Texas music community. For over a half-century, Tommy and Charlene have been making music. Tommy Hancock was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas. Prompted by his grandmother, he began taking classical violin lessons. During World War II, he served as a military police officer and paratrooper. After war's end, Hancock returned to Lubbock and joined the fiddle-driven swing ensemble called the Roadside Playboys. The group hired a female singer named Charlene Condray, born in Morton, Texas, who would later become Tommy’s wife. After operating and performing at the Cotton Club, the musical family moved in 1970 from Lubbock to a cold-water cabin with no electricity or phone in Questa, New Mexico. They began touring under the name of The Supernatural Family Band. Together with their children, Conni, Traci Lamar, Joaquin, and Holli, who learned music by "practicing on the job", their group was as much inspired by Timothy Leary and the Guru, Prem Rawat (Maharaj Ji) as by Bob Wills.

While the Hancocks achieved only a modicum of international acclaim, they were influential role models to many celebrated Texas musicians, among them Buddy Holly, Joe Ely, Butch Hancock (no relation), Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Jesse Taylor, and the Maines Brothers Band. Moreover, in a time of great social change in which the arts—particularly popular music—figured greatly as both record and agent of historical events, the Hancocks were always ahead of the curve in both the development of their music and in the way in which they organized their lives. Eventually, they stopped touring and settled down in Austin, Texas, where the Hancocks currently reside. In 1988, Charlene, with her two daughters Conni and Traci, formed The Texana Dames and toured across the United States and in Europe. Tommy, a notorious barefoot dancer also known as Tom X, published his book Zen and the Art of the Texas Two-Step in 1998.

Scope and Content

This collection contains many recordings of the music of the Hancocks on a wide variety of formats (cassette tapes, 8-tracks, ¼” reel-to-reel, 2” multi-track tape, MiniDV cassettes, VHS dubbed to Beta, etc). It also includes manuscript material, photographs, and posters, as well as performance video recordings and a decade of audio correspondence between Tommy and E. Y. Gibbs, high school pals who worked together as Lubbock firefighters. Particularly on the live performance recordings, the Supernatural Family Band was listed on tape labels by the recording engineer with the interchangeable abbreviations of "SFB", "SNB", and "SNFB". This guide is standardized on the first variation. No attempt was made to standardize playlist titles. Much of the material has been digitized and can be located by its HCK numbers.

Many other items relate to Tommy Hancock's education on the G.I. Bill at Texas Technological College, especially in the theater department and law school, as well as to Lubbock radio and television broadcasting history and the business affairs of the Cotton Club. Tommy's personal writing and newspaper reviews are also represented, as well as his stint teaching in the Presidio, Texas, Independent School District. A late addition is material from the relationship and careers of daughter Traci Lamar and Johnny Torrez, known as Austin's "Commissioner of Comedy".
