Biographical Sketch

Born March 14, 1945, Michael Martin Murphey grew up in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas. He developed a love of cowboy songs and stories while visiting the ranches of his grandfather and uncles. A self-taught campfire musician, he attended college in Denton with Steven Fromholz, Spencer Perskin, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Eddie Wilson. He made a name for himself as a songwriter in California in the 1960s, forming a band with Michael Nesmith and contributing a song to the fourth Monkees album. Murphey moved to Austin in 1970, releasing his own material while helping to build the "Texas music scene". His 1975 album Big Sky--Night Thunder featured the platinum hit song "Wildfire" and was his first of six certified gold albums.

For the last forty years Murphey has toured all over North America. He created other chart singles including "Carolina in the Pines", "What's Forever For", "A Long Line of Love", "Cherokee Fiddle", "Don't Count the Rainy Days", "Cowboy Logic", and "Geronimo's Cadillac". Murphey also authored New Mexico's state ballad, "The Land of Enchantment". In 1987 he established a yearly cultural festival called WestFest and re-invigorated The Cowboy Christmas Ball in Anson, Texas. He has performed with scores of civic orchestras, including the National Symphony of Washington, D.C. His own Sagebrush Symphony was broadcast by PBS in 1996.

Michael Martin Murphey has become a prominent rancher and voice for conservation and pioneer heritage. His family continues in the horse and cattle business under the Rocking 3M brand in Colorado and New Mexico. For his tireless promotion of cowboy music and culture, he is a four-time Wrangler award-winner from the National Cowboy Museum, and a 2004 inductee into the Western Music Hall of Fame.

Scope and Content

The Michael Martin Murphey collection offers legal and business documents, genealogy materials, newspaper clippings, handwritten notes and promotional posters. Much correspondence involves his father P. L. "Pink" Murphey, who also helped manage Michael's business affairs. The holdings feature thousands of photographs, many pertaining to family history and WestFest. Also in this collection are concert play lists, sheet music, chord charts (lead sheets and Nashville notations), song lyrics and music recordings of many formats. Various literary productions include screenplays, video and audio book scripts, and cowboy poetry by Murphey and other authors.

While the material bulks to 1947-2013, some individual published items range as far back as 1844. Many of the manuscript materials, photographs and some of the audio have been scanned into digital files. The collection is in good condition, except as noted, and is part of the Crossroads of Music archive.
