Biographical Sketch

Chuck Pyle, singer-songwiter noted for his inspired lyrics and spirituality, was dubbed by a reviewer as "the Zen Cowboy". His response was to shave his head and re-double his performances at Unity Churches and religious gatherings. He also developed his "Chuck Pyle fingerstyle" of guitar, using the thumb to pluck base while the first three fingers played melody. He taught at The Puget Sound Guitar Workshop and the Swannanoa Gathering.

Born January 28, 1945, he grew up in Newton, Iowa, and first performed at the Iowa Farm Bureau. After moving to Boulder, Colorado in 1965 he was inspired to begin writing songs during a Michael Martin Murphey show. Soon his work was recorded by Jerry Jeff Walker, followed by John Denver, Chris LeDoux, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Suzy Bogguss and Gary P. Nunn, among others.

Pyle toured nationally and wrote the theme music for the Public Broadcasting Sevice show Spirit of Colorado. He recorded 13 albums before his death November 6, 2015, face down in Palmer Lake while fishing near his historic cabin on the Front Range.

Scope and Content

The Chuck Pyle papers offer notebooks and loose sheets of autographic lyrics of his songs and those of friends and contemporaries. There are also posters, press release materials, promotional photographs and a scattering of newspaper reviews and concert announcements.
