Biographical Sketch

Kenneth Melvin "Buck" Ramsey (born January 9, 1938, to David Melvin and Pearl Lee Williams Ramsey on a farm near New Home, Texas-died January 3, 1998, at his home in Amarillo) was raised in Middle Well, Texas, and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1956. He attended both West Texas State College and Texas Technological College and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is best known for his seminal role in the cowboy culture revival of the 1980s and 1990s, in spite of his having worked as a cowboy in the Texas Panhandle for but a short time, from 1958 until his cow-punching days were ended by an accident horseback in 1963 that left him a paraplegic. Having come from a musical family, which included the regionally-popular shape-note gospel group The Ramsey Sisters, Buck had sung jazz standards in high school and in New York City. While still in the hospital after his horse wreck, he was given a guitar by his friend Eddie Reeves (who would go on to a successful career in popular music).

Buck became a writer, contributing to the Amarillo Globe-News and The Texas Observer, and took an active role in local and state politics, including an unsuccessful run for state legislature in 1974. From the mid-1980s up until his death, he was a highly sought-after poet and singer, appearing frequently at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada, as well as many other similar events around the nation. He recorded and released two award-winning albums of traditional cowboy songs, Rolling Uphill from Texas (1993, the National Western Heritage Wrangler Award) and My Home, It Was in Texas (1995, for a second Wrangler Award). Posthumously, he won a third Wrangler in 2004 for his work on the compilation album Hittin’ the Trail. In 1995 he was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts, the nation’s highest recognition for a folk artist. In 1993 his epic poem Grass was published under the title And as I Rode Out on the Morning and later re-released under its original title by Texas Tech University Press in 2005.

Bette Cave Ramsey (born August 16, 1939, to Ellen Louise Woodard and Theodore Lewis “T. L.” Cave in Melissa, Texas) spent her childhood moving with her family as her father pursued work in Texas and New Mexico. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1957 and Amarillo College in 1959 with a BA in Education from West Texas State College in 1961, after which she began her life-long profession of teaching. She and Buck married in 1962. After being awarded a Leadership Fellowship grant from the State of Texas, Bette earned both her MA (1976) and PhD (1979) from Utah State University. Spurred by Buck’s injury, she focused not only her graduate work but also the balance of her career on the practice and application of teaching students with various impairments. She retired from full-time work in 2003 but has served as a consultant ever since. She is also active with the Western Folklife Center in Elko and was an advisory board member of the Crossroads Music Archive at Texas Tech University.

Amanda Robin Ramsey (March 1, 1963, Amarillo) was born in the same hospital in which her father, Buck, was recovering from his accident. She was raised in Amarillo, in Utah and southern Idaho, graduating from Marsh Valley High School in Arimo, Idaho in 1981. She attended Amarillo College (1981-1982), the University of Texas at Austin (1982-1987, BAs in Drama, 1986, and in Humanities, 1987), and Prescott College, AZ (2001-2003, MA candidate in Transformational Studies in Sound and Movement). She was married to Henry Burton “Pony” Allen, Jr. (1988-1991). Amanda often sang on stage with her father.
