Biographical Sketch

Born one of four brothers in the Loma Rosa barrio in Corpus Christi, Texas, on January 3, 1934, Oscar Martinez attended public schools and first learned tuba and saxophone in the Roy Miller High School Buccaneer band. As a teenager he played professionally in local nightclubs like El Macambo and Ibarra's while working in his father’s auto repair shop during the day. He joined the popular Isidro López Orchestra in 1954 but was unable to tour because of his day job selling auto parts. In 1958 he launched his own Impala record label and formed a seven-piece band, switching to trumpet and hiring Juan Perez as vocalist. Early on the Oscar Martinez Band had several regional and Tejano hits: "La Lumbre," "Llorando por ti," "Makes No Difference," and "La Bamba" (1960), which he promoted on his daily radio show on KCCT.

In 1965 he began a string of hits when first Isidro Lopez and then his own group recorded "El Tejano enamorado." This was followed since by "El gallo copetón" and "Corpus Christi Rose," among others. During this period he also worked as an agent for the Galveston-based American National Insurance Company while fronting larger orquestas (up to 14 members) and doing a radio show on KMIQ in Robstown, Texas.

As a composer, Oscar Martinez was inducted into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Tejano R.O.O.T.S. Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2005 his book Tejano Music Talk was published, complete with sheet music. Renowned also as a visual artist, Martinez’s paintings have been exhibited at the Benson Library and the Barrientos Cultural Center in Austin. At age 79 he still sings at various venues across South Texas and established a college scholarship for music students from his high school alma mater.

Scope and Content

The Oscar Martinez papers include his recorded music on a variety of media, plus an oral history, prints from his painted self-portraits in the calavera or Dia de los Muertas style, and audio transcripts from his radio show on KMIQ from 1999 to 2006. Some material is digital-only, and many of the physical holdings are also available as digital Patron copies. The collection is in good condition and is part of the Crossroads of Music archive.
