The Governor's Commission on Physical Fitness was created by Senate
Bill 574, 62nd Legislature, effective June 14, 1971 (Texas Civil Statutes,
Article 4413(44)). It consisted of 15 members representing all fields of
physical fitness (including both youth and adult levels), “widely known
for their professional competence and experience.” The Governor appointed
members for six-year terms, with the advice and consent of the State Senate.
The purposes of the Commission were to educate the general public concerning
the needs for, and benefits of physical fitness; to help coordinate the efforts
of the Central Education Agency, local school boards, private and parochial
schools, industry, and physical fitness commissions of local government, of
other states, and of the federal government in the field of physical fitness;
to disseminate physical fitness information by publications, conferences,
workshops, programs, lectures, etc.; to collect pertinent information and data
available from other state departments and agencies; to encourage, promote, and
assist in the development of physical fitness programs for all ages; to
evaluate existing programs; and to inventory existing facilities and make
recommendations for their optimum utilization. Following Sunset Commission
review, the Governor's Commission on Physical Fitness was abolished in
1987.
These records consist of budget records for fiscal years 1973-1989
(including budget estimates/requests for appropriations, annual and semiannual
performance reports and fund transfers, annual (financial) reports, audit
reports, instructions, workpapers with supporting documentation, etc.); subject
files, 1984-1987 (containing correspondence and memoranda, reports, agenda,
lists of speakers, mailing lists, notes, job descriptions, resumes, news
releases, newspaper and magazine articles, etc.); and cassette tapes recording
20 meetings of the Governor's Commission on Physical Fitness and its Task
Forces, 1972-1984.
To prepare this inventory, the described materials were cursorily
reviewed to delineate series, to confirm the accuracy of contents lists, to
provide an estimate of dates covered, and to determine record types.
