Texas State Senator Drew Nixon was born on November 21, 1959. After
graduating from Carthage High School, Nixon attended Panola Junior College and
Stephen F. Austin State University, where he graduated in 1982 with a bachelor
of business administration in accounting. On November 8, 1994, Drew Nixon was
elected to represent the Third Senatorial District. He was the first Republican
to serve this district since Reconstruction. During the 74th Legislature,
Senator Nixon served on three committees: State Affairs, Health and Human
Services, and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Agriculture. During the 75th
Legislature he served as the Vice-Chair of State Affairs and on Health and
Human Services, Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water,
Congressional/Legislative Redistricting, and Nominations Committees. During the
76th Legislature he served on Health Services, Intergovernmental Relations, and
State Affairs Subcommittee on Infrastructure. Nixon supported pro-business and
economic development legislation and had interests in education and the
criminal justice system. Senator Nixon chose not to run for reelection during
the 2000 election.
Correspondence, bill copies, amendments, fiscal notes, memoranda, bill
analyses, printed materials, reports, notes, publications, photocopied
clippings, legal documents, and press releases document the activities and
responsibilities of Texas State Senator Drew Nixon from 1991 to 2000, and
undated (bulk 1995-2000). The bill files were written by Senator Nixon and
submitted during the 74th, 75th, and 76th Legislative Sessions. A few files
document the work done by Senator Nixon on the Senate Intergovernmental
Relations and State Affairs Committees in 1999 and 2000. The majority of the
correspondence consists of constituent casework, in which Nixon and his staff
attempted to assist his constituents in resolving personal problems. Some
correspondence reflects public opinion on the bills and issues considered by
the Senate during the 76th Legislative session (1999). District office files
were created, collected, and maintained by the Senator's local staff. General
office files document the internal working of Nixon's offices and include
schedules, Governor's appointments, files of collected newsletters and press
releases, and a few assorted subject files on redistricting, a juvenile curfew,
and local office holders.
The files document the topics that interested Senator Nixon and his
constituents. They include, among others, issues regarding property appraisal,
municipal annexation, air and water quality issues (particularly surrounding
the Angelina and Neches Rivers), liability, consanguinity, oil, mineral
interests, a creosote superfund project, historically underutilized businesses,
veterans, local roads and transportation, timber, education, the Montgomery
County Hospital District, utilities, flooding, wastewater, and homeowner's
associations.
To prepare this inventory, the described materials were cursorily
reviewed to delineate series, to confirm the accuracy of contents lists, to
provide an estimate of dates covered, and to determine record types.

Restrictions on Access
Because of the possibility that portions of these records fall under
Public Information Act exceptions including, but not limited to, Texas
Government Code, Chapter 306, an archivist must review these records before
they can be accessed for research. The records may be requested for research
under the provisions of the Public Information Act (V.T.C.A., Government Code,
Chapter 552). The researcher may request an interview with an archivist or
submit a request by mail, fax, or email including enough description and detail

records decision from the Attorney General on whether the records can be
released. The Public Information Act allows the Archives ten working days after
receiving a request to make this determination. The Attorney General has 45

Restrictions on Access |
|
Because of the possibility that portions of these records fall
under Public Information Act exceptions including, but not limited to, Texas
Government Code, Chapter 306, an archivist must review these records before
they can be accessed for research. The records may be requested for research
under the provisions of the Public Information Act (V.T.C.A., Government Code,
Chapter 552). The researcher may request an interview with an archivist or
submit a request by mail, fax, or email including enough description and detail
about the information requested to enable the archivist to accurately identify
and locate the information requested. If our review reveals information that
may be excepted by the Public Information Act, we are obligated to seek an open
records decision from the Attorney General on whether the records can be
released. The Public Information Act allows the Archives ten working days after
receiving a request to make this determination. The Attorney General has 45
working days to render a decision. Alternately, the Archives can inform you of
the nature of the potentially excepted information and if you agree, that
information can be redacted or removed and you can access the remainder of the
records. |
