Biographical Sketches
Wilhelm Steinert
The German traveler, Wilhelm Steinert, came to Texas in 1849 to investigate conditions for Germans who were considering emigrating. He spent several months touring Texas and other parts of the United States before returning to Germany later that year. To report his findings, Steinert published his journal in Berlin in 1850.
Gilbert J. Jordan
Gilbert J. Jordan (1902-1992) was a professor of German at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas from 1938 to 1968, and later professor emeritus. After his 1968 retirement until 1973 he was a professor of German at Sam Houston State University. He was educated at Southwestern University, the University of Texas, and Ohio State University.
Scope and Contents of the Papers
The papers consist of an original typescript translation from German to English, [197-?], and a photocopy, [19--], of a German traveler's journal of his visit to Texas and other parts of the United States in 1849. The translation was by Gilbert J. Jordan. It is entitled "North America - Particularly Texas in the Year 1849 - A Travel Account by W. Steinert - A Book for Prospective Emigrants." The photocopy was obtained from Yale University by Professor Jordan to translate the Steinert journal. Portions of Jordan's undated translation were published in a five-part series in the Southwestern Historical Quarterly, beginning with Volume LXXX, Number 1, in July 1976.
