		  an original typescript translation from German to English, [197-?], and a
		  photocopy, [19--], of a German traveler's journal of his visit to Texas and
		  other parts of the United States in 1849 (published in 1850). The photocopy was
		  made from a copy of the published journal at Yale University. The translation
		  was prepared by Gilbert J. Jordan, probably in the 1970s.</abstract>

         <head>Biographical Sketches</head>
         <bioghist>
            <head>Wilhelm Steinert</head>
            <p>The German traveler, Wilhelm Steinert, came to Texas in 1849 to
			 investigate conditions for Germans who were considering emigrating. He spent
			 several months touring Texas and other parts of the United States before
			 returning to Germany later that year. To report his findings, Steinert
			 published his journal in Berlin in 1850.</p>

            <head>Gilbert J. Jordan</head>
            <p>Gilbert J. Jordan (1902-1992) was a professor of German at Southern
			 Methodist University in Dallas, Texas from 1938 to 1968, and later professor
			 emeritus. After his 1968 retirement until 1973 he was a professor of German at
			 Sam Houston State University. He was educated at Southwestern University, the
			 University of Texas, and Ohio State University. </p>

         <head>Scope and Contents of the Papers</head>
         <p>The papers consist of an original typescript translation from German
		  to English, [197-?], and a photocopy, [19--], of a German traveler's journal of
		  his visit to Texas and other parts of the United States in 1849. The
		  translation was by Gilbert J. Jordan. It is entitled <emph render="doublequote">North America - Particularly Texas in the Year 1849 - A Travel
		  Account by W. Steinert - A Book for Prospective Emigrants.</emph> The photocopy
		  was obtained from Yale University by Professor Jordan to translate the Steinert
		  journal. Portions of Jordan's undated translation were published in a five-part
		  series in the <emph render="italic">Southwestern Historical Quarterly</emph>,
		  beginning with Volume LXXX, Number 1, in July 1976.</p>
