Edwin M. Russell
Edwin M. Russell's family originated in Williamsburg, New York. His place of birth is unknown. He came from Michigan to Texas, settling in 1885 at Stoney, in Denton County. In December of 1889 he was located in Sunset, Texas. Early in 1889 he was in Wellington, in Collinsworth County, and in 1891 he was back in the same location. He took up farming, raising a wide variety of crops on a small scale basis, including wheat, corn, sweet potatoes, and some fruit. He had two brothers, Dr. Allan Russell, and Fred Russell, who worked with him on the farm. Edwin was the son of the sister (name unknown) of Mary Ann Russell, the first wife of Asa Harding Stoddard.
Asa Harding Stoddard
Asa Harding Stoddard came to Kalamazoo, Michigan from Wayne County, New York in 1863 with his wife and two sons, Will and Lucien. Asa Stoddard was the great grandfather of the donor, Mrs. DeWitt. Lucien and his wife, Vinnie were Mrs. DeWitt's grandparents. Ellsworth Stoddard was the oldest brother of the donor's mother.
Papers are eighteen letters, dating 1885-1886, 1889-1892, 1897, from Edwin Russell to his uncle, Asa Harding Stoddard, and other family members. Russell lived in Texas and wrote to his uncle and other relatives in Michigan about the weather, his crops, prices, his health, religion, the Russell family reunion, and a time when he was a witness in a case of drunkenness of a county official. Many individuals are mentioned in these letters, including Lucien and Vinnie Stoddard, Dr. Allan Russell, Fred Russell, Ellsworth Stoddard, Will Stoddard, Mr. Congdon, and Mr. Thatcher. Areas mentioned in the letters include Stoney, Wellington, and Clifford, all of which are in Texas.
